Soundscape 1

The prompt for this assignment was to create a soundscape we are familiar with. The definition of a soundscape can be found in my last post discussing some reading. My initial idea came to me when I was at either lunch or dinner (I don’t remember) and everything at the dining hall was unavailable because of the amount of people. I decided to make my soundscape one of the dining hall and use the narration to poke fun at a few of the short comings and quirks. There were a couple jokes I had to cut for time: I had a long section about how the drink machine leaks when you use it and I had a smaller joke about how there is soup but everyone forgets about it. Thank you to two of my friends for providing secondary voices for this, because I feel like having that “eye-witness testimony” gives a funny contrast to the narration. When I started writing, I tried going for one of those travel commercials but with satirical elements. I didn’t record as much audio as I would have liked in the dining hall. In addition to that, I was unable to get a high quality microphone when it came time to do the narration which I feel would have added to the difference between the people in the place and the narration. The toaster joke at the end was inspired by the one time that I was getting food and I heard one of the guys who works there saying “the toaster is smoking.” So I added that in as a little ending stinger with the fire alarm fading in that I think is really damn funny. I experimented with using noise gates in this to isolate voices and get rid of quiet breathing. I think it worked well.
