The prompt for this assignment was to remix a voicemail into a 90 second story. I don’t get many voicemails. In fact, I don’t get any. So instead, I decided to script a short little fiction of my own. I was inspired by an adventure for the tabletop role-playing game Call of Cthulhu where a well-to-do neighbor actually has a weird monster in his basement. Since a voicemail necessitates two parties, I decided to transfer this from a single person to a nice, normal couple that so happen to have some strange creature in their cellar. Since a voicemail necessitates two parties, I decided to transfer this from a single person to a nice, normal couple that so happen to have some strange creature in their cellar. This one was pretty fun to record and write. I turned away from my microphone when recording the yelling part, which I think came off very well. The noises of the creature in the basement were also pretty fun, even if a roommate ruined a take by talking to loudly in the other room. It was some good exercise of my growling capabilities. This episode also continues the proud tradition of recording in a bathroom! That’s three of the four that I’ve recorded in a restroom, and this will likely continue because it’s a place I won’t be interrupted. I am also really happy with the effect I got on everything. It’s just that nice little bit of low quality and a little distortion that make it feel like it’s being spoken over the phone. I wish I could clean up the main voice track though. My aforementioned roommate can be heard a little bit during it. I feel like you can’t hear that well in the final mix, though, so I think it worked out fine. The sounds of the cage rattling around and the click of the phone were taken from Freesound.org under creative commons license. All other sounds were made by me.
