Audio Playground 3
The assignment this time around was to create a story through a list. I had a hard time coming up with an idea for this prompt. I had ideas that ranged from the really stupid to ones that were just straight up depressing. All of the ideas I was coming up with didn’t really tell a story, though. Eventually I settled on a how-to guide inspired by those old VHS tapes from the 80s and 90s. Then I decided to lampoon my roommate’s poor sleeping habits and that’s how this was born. I recorded the sounds of the blankets shifting, the snoring, and the groan all myself. The music is designed to give that 80s new wave feel, with the cheesy synths and all that. The track is The Incredible Shrinking Larry by Matt Oakley from Free Music Archive. The alarm clock sounds and the tape noises were taken from freesound.org. I made a point to put a good amount of space in between the steps so I could move them around if I wanted. I’m glad I did that because otherwise I think the different sounds I have wouldn’t be able to shine through. In addition to the mobility of the clips, the space also let me focus on keeping a good pace. I tried putting on a filter on the sounds so that it sounds like it was coming through an old VCR. I used the same effect that I used for the voice mail remix, and I’m not sure if I’m super happy with how it turned out here. Levels were a tad bit tricky because there is a lot going on here between the music, the narration, and the sound effects. However, I didn’t run into any technical issues like I did with my first audio playground so everything worked out in the end.
