Scripted Story, April 1

I am focusing on prompt 3: a pressing challenge in the country and how my generation is going to fix it. I am specifically going to be tackling the issue of violence against trans youth, something that is very much in my mind as a young transgender woman. A couple of ideas for interviewees would be trans college students to ask how they feel about the current state of being trans in the United States and members of the club Generation Action to ask about the activism being done against the rising wave of transphobia. I would need to do background research into recent legislation across the country as well as statistics on anti-trans crimes both of which I would be able to find online. My narration would provide the context for the current state of affairs as well as offer my own perspective as a trans student at UNE. As for sounds that would be important, sounds of a rally would be good to get for the segment speaking on activism for an example. My story’s driving question is how are trans people in the United States being attacked and how can the average person help. My story is not about trans suicide though that in and of itself is a large issue.

To ensure my story is fair, I will not be commenting on the interviews besides providing context for specific things (e.g. if they reference a bill or specific event, the narration will give a short explanation). To keep the audience engaged, I am going to open by speaking of a recent, very publicized event of anti-trans violence. Throughout, I will be sure to keep bringing in the human element by offering my experiences and by bringing in the testimony of multiple other trans people. The two key elements sonically are the delivery of my narration and the music in the background. I need to make sure that the music not only reflects the tone but also does not overpower the speakers. My delivery needs to be very professional in order for me to sound like an authority on this issue. I want my audience to remember the human element of this story. I want people to come away from this with the feeling that innocent, ordinary people are being targeted on a national scale and that something must be done to stop this.
